One of the things I want to get back into this year is having smoothies.
I’m a little bit odd though, I have them not in the morning but in the arvo… I know bit backward but I am of Irish decent so maybe makes a little sense, lol. I just can’t do early morning breakfast. I know, I’m ‘one of those people’…
I love the ‘idea’ of breakfast it just doesn’t love me back, makes me want to be sick everytime. I can do it after 10.30am or so… but before it’s just a no go!
So it’s a cup of coffee (a must!) and then I’m good until lunch, well depending on whether its hot or not. Sometimes I even forget and wonder why I’m hungry and it’s like 3pm. I know, I can hear you all screaming at me through the monitor. Don’t freak out I can totally hear you! I know it’s not healthy, but you know what it’s just me and if I am actually hungry I do eat… I make some yummy salads you know 😛
Any-who, one of the things we adopted last year was smoothies after school pick up. It was a great way to get hungry kidlets feed at that all telling 3:30-itis time. Instead of chips, biscuits and all those crappy bits and bobs it was a nutritious smoothie. This worked a treat, it even got Ed eating fruit… I tried sneak some extra goodness in there too, but those children! Will easily find the tiny chia seeds in their smoothie but NOOO! can’t find that laundry basket!
So although the kids smoothies are simple Banana, Honey & Milo. Mine I get (surprise, surprise) a little more creative. I’ve tested some different flavour combos that work well and I really enjoyed. I will start sharing a few of these over the coming weeks. Not all are milk based and I found these more thirst quenching and satisfying than those that were, especially on a hot day.
So whilst I get my bum into gear and start taking pics and recording ingredient quantities of my smoothies I thought I’d tantalise you with some yummy Smoothie Inspo I found on Pinterest. Always a good way to get the idea factory going…
I do a yummy banana smoothie that also has mango & cardamom! Which is one of my all time favourite spices. This one with the addition of pineapple, orange juice and yogurt is sure to pack a citrusy punch!
I have not been one to go into the ‘Green Smoothie’ crazy, I just haven’t found one that I would really be to interested in drinking. If I wanted spinach or kale I’d just eat, preferably in a salad! lol. But this one has be actually considering it. I think the idea of using Kiwi Fruit seems to make it less weird to me. It also has orange juice but I think I’d replace this with apple juice. But otherwise seems pretty refreshing and a bloody good hit of vitamin C.
I like the sound of this, it’d be nutty and creamy which would be different but tasty… and filling I’d suspect. It would also be packed with some good fatty-acids which my Doc tells me I need more of to elevate my GOOD cholesterol (tad low… but bad is lower than was, so Big PHEW!)
Interesting take from the ladies at Small Fry Blog on a cleanse for the kids after the junk filled holiday period. I know it would not fly in my house… Gee I’d be happy for my kids to eat those healthy ‘snacks’ in-between let alone the smoothies! But kids aside I love the ‘Peach Smoothie’ this sounds all kinds of yum! Peaches, Carrot, Pineapple and Orange Juice… I think it sounds delicious! With the peaches and pineapples in season this one seems like a summer time no brainer!
Well I hope all that has got you all inspired to whip out your Blender, Magic Bullet or equivalent and get blending. I know I have, I’m really interested in that last one. I am liking the juice ones at the moment.
One I am into at the moment I am going to share on the blog next week and it is so yum! Real thirst quencher and you could always add a splash of Vodka on a Friday night!… see always thinkin’ 😛

Do you have a secret weapon or spice you add to the mix?
